barcelona thrift anomaly: 3105935, 1724069372 and the hunt for damp-day gold

@Topiclo Admin3/18/2026blog

okay, so i'm in barcelona and it's... i just checked and it's 12.74°C but feels like 11.66, humidity at 61% and the air pressure is 1016 hPa-my weather app says. the sky's a flat gray, like someone spilled milk over the city, and it's drizzling just enough to make the cobblestones shiny but not enough to soak you. perfect for thrift hunting because the crowds stay away.

i've got two numbers stuck in my head: 3105935 and 1724069372. i saw them scribbled in pencil inside a 70s denim jacket i picked up at el encants for like five euros. the vendor, a grizzled guy who looked like he hasn't slept in years, just muttered "un recuerdo" when i asked. later, while i was nursing a cortado, a woman at the next table whispered 1724069372 into her phone and hung up abruptly. i'm not superstitious, but it feels like a clue. maybe it's coordinates? 31° 05' 93.5" and 172° 40' 69.372"? that's somewhere in the pacific, far from here. so probably not. anyway, i'll keep an eye out.

anyway, the map i pinned shows exactly where i'm operating:

that's the area around el born and the lower part of the gothic quarter, where the streets are a maze and you never know what's behind a doorway.

i've been doing this for three years now, and barcelona still surprises me. the trick is to go beyond the obvious spots. sure, the mercat de sant antoni on sundays is packed with tourists, but if you venture past the main aisles into the back where the locals sell stuff from their attics, you'll find treasures. i once got a wool coat from the '40s with a tailor's mark in catalan that said "senyora maria, 1942". i paid 12 euros. that coat kept me warm through two winters.

let's talk specific shops. tot emporter on carrer de la riera alta-i've heard they have a back room. the owner, marcos, is a skinny guy with thick glasses and a permanent coffee stain on his shirt. you have to ask for "la sala secreta" and slip him a five euro coin. i did it once and he just laughed and said "todo es público" and pointed to a regular rack. maybe the rumor is just that-a rumor. but still, the shop's full of 80s blazers and silk scarves. link: some guy's list on tripadvisor.

another gem: lavera in gràcia. it's a consignment shop run by a former fashion editor from madrid. she's picky, so everything's curated. i found a Yves Saint Laurent blouse from the 70s with the original tag. it was priced at 30 euros because she thought it was "too fancy". check their yelp page for hours-they change them randomly to avoid crowds.

then there's el encants, the flea market next to the sagrada familia. it's huge, chaotic, and full of everything from broken electronics to vintage dresses. the best time is early morning, like 7am, when the old ladies spread their blankets. i heard that one lady sells her late husband's clothes from the civil war era, but you have to speak catalan to get her to show the good stuff. Barcelona subreddit thread on el encants had a tip: look for the stall with the red umbrella.

neighbors: if the city starts to feel too dense, you're only a short train ride away from girona, with its own medieval market where you can find linen shirts that look like they're from the 1500s. or sitges, a coastal town 40 minutes south, known for its vintage swimwear and the film festival. i heard that during the festival, collectors from all over europe come to sell their stash. so plan accordingly.

the weather today is actually decent for this activity: 12.74°C max, down to 11.59 at night, feels like 11.66 because of the sea breeze. humidity 61% keeps my hands from getting too dry when i'm handling old fabrics. pressure 1016 means it's stable, no sudden storms to ruin my haul.

i've got a hotspot for today: i'm going to backtrack to a shop i passed yesterday in the raval-'cyclops vintage' or something. it had a weird sign and a bunch of military jackets piled outside. i'm hoping to find something with the numbers embroidered on the inside. that'd be a story.

before i forget, here are three random images from unsplash that capture the vibe (i'm too busy to take my own, plus my phone's storage is full of photos of jackets):

i should mention that i'm using these unsplash images because they're free and i'm a poor blogger, but they're cool.

anyway, as the sun sets (well, it's more like the clouds get darker), i'm heading back. tomorrow, i'm told that the storage unit auction at the port is happening-some container full of untouched shipments from the 90s. someone whispered the code to get in is... 1724069372? i'll have to see. the guy who told me had a missing tooth and smelled like garlic, so maybe it's bunk. but it's barcelona; everything's possible.

catch you on the flip side, and if you find a jacket with the number 3105935 inside, let me know. might be the key to my next big find.
