Balikpapan, My Gear is Melting & Other Stories

okay, so i've been in balikpapan for three days and i'm already questioning all my life choices that led me to bring a full-frame dslr in this sauna. the humidity's sitting at a solid 83%, which means my camera lens fogged up twice before i even left the guesthouse. i just checked and it's...well, it's exactly what the numbers said: 27.7°c but feels like i'm breathing through a wet sock. the light here is insane though-like someone cranked the saturation and contrast sliders all the way up and forgot to save.

so here's the thing about balikpapan: it's not postcard pretty. it's gritty, oily, buzzing with machinery, and then suddenly-bam-a perfect mangrove boardwalk where the water's black and still as glass. i found it after following a stray dog for twenty minutes (mutts always know the good spots). i shot for an hour and then the sky just exploded in pinks and oranges. someone told me that the local fishermen complain the sunset 'steals their daily catch' because everyone drops nets to stare. i believe them.

the gossip here is wild. i heard at a warung that a famous travel blogger called this place 'surabaya's forgotten cousin' and now all the hipsters are flocking to the old refinery viewing deck. i went at dawn and there was a guy doing a photoshoot with a drone shaped like a starfish. true story. if you get bored, semayang island's just a rattling boat ride away-the water's so clear you can see your toes turning into sand dollars. or so i'm told.

speaking of rumors: don't trust the yelp reviews for 'warung lele'. the one with the 4.8 stars? the fish is frozen. the real spot is the cart by the mechanics' garage-they use chili that'll make you see god. here's the lowdown from a local food forum. also, pro tip: your battery will die faster in this humidity. carry a ziploc bag with silica gel like it's your firstborn.

i spent yesterday trying to photograph the oil port at night. all those cranes and pipes lit up like a sci-fi set. a security guard yelled at me in bahasa, then handed me a warm teh tarik and pointed to a better angle. that's balikpapan for you-grumpy, generous, covered in a fine mist of diesel. the pressure's 1009 hpa, whatever that means, but it feels like the air's pressing down on your shutter button. i love it. i hate it.

if you're planning a trip, read the recent forum threads on tripadvisor first. the ferry schedules change with the tide, and locals warn that the 'shortcut' through the market will cost you a new camera strap and maybe a toe. i learned that the hard way.

anyway, i'm off to find the rumored 'hidden beach' behind the pineapple plantations. my guidebook says it doesn't exist. the taxi driver winked and said, 'exist only for those who swim past the crocodiles.' probably a joke. probably.
