Austin After Dark: Numbers, Heat & a Whole Lotta Weird
okay, so i’m still processing *Austin. that city…it’s something else. i landed last night and the numbers 4709013 and 1840020702 were practically flashing on the arrival screen. felt like a secret code they were trying to give me. and the weather? honestly, it’s…there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. temp 26.01, feels like 26.01 - a little sticky, a little intense, definitely making me appreciate air conditioning.
this trip was supposed to be about finding some…flow, you know? escaping the endless project deadlines, the soul-crushing spreadsheets. i’m a freelance photographer, so mostly I’m chasing light, and Austin definitely has that in spades, even when it’s hidden behind a haze of humidity.
my first night was a blur. wandered around South Congress, soaking it all in. the murals are insane - a total explosion of color. i saw some seriously interesting vintage shops; definitely check out the ones on SCO - Yelp has a bunch listed. i actually managed to snag a killer denim jacket for like, $30. score!
spent some time down by the Colorado River. it wasn't exactly serene - lots of people just hanging out, music spilling out of bars, the usual Austin chaos. i overheard someone say they go kayaking there almost every day. maybe i'll try that tomorrow. i'm trying to keep things loose, not over-plan. but i did make a little gear list because, let's be real, i'm easily overwhelmed.

Camera (obviously)
Extra batteries (seriously, don't forget these)
Portable charger (essential for all the phone pics)
Comfortable shoes (you'll be doing a LOT of walking)
Reusable water bottle (hydration is key)
Hat and sunscreen (the sun is no joke)

I’m staying in a little Airbnb in *East Austin. super cute, super quirky. the neighbors seem chill. if you get bored, cities are just a short drive away. apparently, there’s a really great food truck scene here - someone told me that the breakfast tacos are legendary, but to avoid the ones near the tourist traps.
A few things i’ve picked up: someone told me that the Continental Club has live music every night, but it gets packed. another rumor i heard is that there’s a hidden speakeasy somewhere downtown - i’m determined to find it. i even saw a street artist working on a massive mural - really impressive stuff.
The humidity is a beast, but the energy here is infectious. it’s a weird mix of laid-back vibes and intense creativity. i'm hoping to spend some time exploring the Keep Austin Weird* spirit. speaking of weird, i spotted a guy dressed as a giant avocado - no explanation. just…there.
tomorrow, i'm planning on checking out Zilker Park. apparently, they have some pretty amazing views from there, and it’s a good place to escape the city bustle. also, i heard that the food is amazing - but be prepared for a wait. i’m craving some good coffee, and i’ve heard Coffee Project isn't bad. anyway, gotta go - the sun is starting to set (finally!). this place is definitely getting under my skin.
