athens on 20 euros: a sleep-deprived student's chaotic guide

okay, so i landed in athens with a backpack that smells like regret and a phone full of weird numbers: 8133880 and 1300675902. no idea what they mean-maybe a bus route? a secret gyro code? i called the second one and some dude screamed in greek then hung up. classic.

the weather here is... odd. just checked my app: 15.49°c but feels like 14.56, pressure 1024 hpa, humidity 56%. sea level 1024, ground level 1005. i have no clue what that combo means but it's not raining and i'm sweating slightly in a hoodie. perfect for wandering.

if you get bored, piraeus is a cheap ferry ride away-like 8 euros to aegina for pistachios and honey. someone on a sketchy facebook group swore aegina has the best honey, and i'm a sucker for cheap carbs.

someone told me the acropolis museum is a tourist trap, but i went anyway. the views from the top are legit, even if the parthenon is half-covered in scaffolding. i overheard a tour guide muttering about marbles in london-heavy stuff for 10 am.

for food, i'm surviving on 3.50 euro gyros from this hole-in-the-wall near syntagma. yelp rates it 4 stars but locals queue at 2 am. tripadvisor reviews are hit or miss, but i think it's fire. also tried a vegan spot in kerameikos for 6 euros-check it on yelp under 'vegan athens cheap'.

here's a map of my chaos:

the streets are all white-washed chaos with cats sunbathing everywhere. like this:

athens street

and

athens architecture

and

athens food

-that last one's a gyro, obviously.

crashing in a 12-euro hostel with no ac. who needs ac when max temp is 16.36? humidity 56% means i'm sticky but broke. booked via hostelworld but booking.com sometimes has last-minute steals.

pro-tip from a bartender: learn 'efharisto'-it sometimes gets you a discount. also, get the ian student card if under 26. saves euros everywhere.

pressure 1024? high means clear skies? i dunno. but it's not raining. sea level 1024, ground 1005-athens is inland but close, so that tracks.

street art in exarchia is insane, but sketchy after dark. someone warned me about pickpockets, so i zip my backpack. used athens local guide to find cool bars-avoid alone at night.

tomorrow, beach day at vravrona. short bus ride, ancient ruins, and less crowds. read on a local forum it's perfect for budget travelers.

spent 20 euros yesterday on food, bus, and hostel. that's living. the numbers 8133880 and 1300675902? still a mystery. maybe they're a code to some hidden bar. or just sleep-deprivation. either way, athens is messy, real, and cheap-exactly what i needed.
