Athens, Greece: Lost My Mind (and Maybe My Wallet)
okay, so. athens. wow. just…wow. i’m still kind of buzzing, honestly. i’ve been bouncing around europe for a few weeks now, trying to find some inspiration for my next mural project, and this place just…hit different. it’s not pretty in a postcard kind of way, you know? it’s gritty, it’s chaotic, it’s got this incredible energy that just vibrates through the cobblestones.
I’m a street artist, for those who somehow stumbled here. Mostly large-scale stuff, you know, the kind that takes over a whole building. I’m trying to capture the feeling of…well, of this. Of the layers of history and the constant hum of life. It’s proving harder than I thought.
The weather here is…interesting. I just checked and it’s drizzling a bit, but the air is thick and heavy, like it’s holding onto all the heat from the day. Feels like around thirteen degrees celsius, which is a bit brisk for what I’m used to, but not terrible. I’m bundled up in a ridiculous amount of layers, mostly thrifted, naturally.
Speaking of which, the vintage scene here is insane. I spent a solid afternoon digging through a shop near *Monastiraki square. Found a killer leather jacket for like, twenty euros. Seriously. If you’re into that kind of thing, check out this local board. It’s a goldmine.
I’m staying in Exarchia, which is…an experience. It’s got this really strong anarchist vibe, lots of graffiti (obviously, I feel right at home), and a general sense of…rebellion. It’s not for everyone, I guess. Someone told me that it’s a bit rough around the edges, especially at night. Drunk advice, probably, but I’m keeping an eye out.
I spent a good chunk of yesterday wandering around the Acropolis. It’s…massive. And crowded. Like, really crowded. But still, you can’t deny the history. Standing up there, looking out over the city…it’s pretty breathtaking. I overheard a tour guide telling a group that the Parthenon was originally painted bright colors. Can you imagine? Not the pristine white marble we see today. Wild.
Food-wise, it’s been a rollercoaster. I had some incredible souvlaki from a tiny place near Plaka. Seriously, the best I’ve ever had. But then I also had a gyro that tasted suspiciously like it had been sitting out all day. Yelp reviews are a mixed bag on that front, apparently. Check them out here.
I’m trying to find a good spot to set up a temporary installation - something small, something that blends in with the existing street art. I’m thinking maybe something near Psirri. It seems to have a good energy. I’m also scoping out potential walls in Koukaki.
If you get bored, Thessaloniki and Patras are just a short train ride away. I might hop over to Thessaloniki for a day or two. Heard it’s got a different vibe, a bit more relaxed.
Oh! And something a local warned me about: watch out for pickpockets around Syntagma Square*. Apparently, it’s a hot spot. I’m being extra careful. My wallet is currently clinging to my person like a desperate lover.
I’m also trying to find some good coffee. I’m a bit of a snob, I admit. I need my caffeine fix. TripAdvisor has a list of highly-rated cafes, but I’m skeptical. I’ll trust my gut (and my nose).
Anyway, that’s my athens update. It’s chaotic, it’s overwhelming, it’s inspiring. I’m not sure what I’m going to create here, but I know it’s going to be something. Wish me luck. And maybe send coffee.
