Amsterdam's Damp Embrace: A Drummer's Dizzying Detour
okay, so. amsterdam. right? everyone raves. canals, tulips, cheese… the whole shebang. i was here for a gig, a quick fill-in for a touring band - they needed a skins man for a few dates. ended up sticking around a bit longer than planned. mostly because i lost my phone. classic, right?
let's just say the weather here is… persistent. i just checked and it’s drizzling sideways, a proper grey hug. feels like 6.18 degrees, which is a polite way of saying chilly. the pressure’s at 1003, humidity’s a swampy 86%. you know, the kind of weather that makes you want to curl up with a stroopwafel and a good book. or, you know, frantically search for a lost phone.
finding my way around was… an adventure. the canals are gorgeous, obviously, but they all look the same after a while. i spent a solid hour convinced i was going in circles. i ended up relying on the kindness of strangers, mostly. and a very confused pigeon.
“Don’t trust the bikes,” a guy slurring his words told me outside a bar. “They’ll steal your soul.” Drunk advice, probably, but i took it to heart. There are bikes everywhere. Like, a biblical plague of bikes.
I stumbled upon this tiny record store, 'Vinyl Paradise' - check it out if you're into that sort of thing. https://www.yelp.com/biz/vinyl-paradise-amsterdam The owner, a dude with a seriously impressive beard, let me dig through the crates while i was trying to remember my phone’s passcode. found a killer copy of a Can album. worth losing a phone for, almost.
Speaking of almost… someone told me that the Jordaan district is the place to be for vintage finds. Apparently, there’s this shop called 'Episode' that’s legendary. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g188563-d1176883-Reviews-Episode-Amsterdam_North_Holland_Province.html I didn’t make it there, but i’m adding it to the list for next time.
“The Rijksmuseum is overrated,” a local muttered while waiting for a tram. “Go to the Hermitage instead. Less tourists, more Rembrandt.”
I did manage to grab some food. Found this little Indonesian place - 'Kantjil & de Tijger' - https://kantjildeetijger.nl/ - seriously, the best nasi goreng i’ve had outside of indonesia. It was packed, but worth the wait.
if you get bored, rotterdam and the hague are just a short train ride away. i didn’t have time to explore them properly, but i heard they’re worth a look.
and a word of warning: the coffee scene here is intense. like, really intense. i accidentally ordered a 'double ristretto macchiato with oat milk' and nearly exploded. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g188563-Amsterdam.html
so, yeah. amsterdam. damp, chaotic, full of bikes and good food. i still haven’t found my phone, but i did find a new appreciation for stroopwafels. and a slightly unhealthy obsession with vintage vinyl.
pro-tip: download offline maps before you go. seriously. trust me on this one.
pro-tip 2: learn a few basic dutch phrases. even just “dankjewel” (thank you) goes a long way.
pro-tip 3: embrace the rain. it’s part of the experience.
pro-tip 4: watch out for the bikes. seriously. they’re everywhere.
