Amsterdam's Damp Embrace: A Botanist's Bewilderment (and a Few Fries)

okay, so amsterdam. everyone raves, right? canals, tulips, cheese… the whole shebang. i’m elara, by the way, and i’m a botanist. yeah, i know, not exactly the most thrilling travel profile. but plants are everywhere, even in a city built on water. and honestly, that’s what drew me in.

I just checked and it’s… a persistent drizzle, clinging to everything like a determined vine. the kind that soaks through your boots and makes your hair frizz into a defiant halo. i’m not complaining, though. it’s atmospheric. it’s… conducive to moss growth. seriously, the moss here is thriving.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time just staring at the canal banks. the way the water reflects the buildings, the little pockets of greenery clinging to the stone… it’s a surprisingly resilient ecosystem. i even spotted some Veronica beccabunga - brookweed - growing right out of a crack in the pavement. hardcore.

I wandered around the *Jordaan district, which is lovely, all cobbled streets and quirky shops. someone told me that the best stroopwafels are from a tiny place on Prinsengracht. i can’t confirm or deny - i ate approximately six. no regrets. i did check out the Hortus Botanicus, of course. it’s a classic, and the medicinal plant collection is impressive. you can find more info on their website: https://hortusbotanicus.nl/.

I overheard some drunk tourists arguing about whether the Anne Frank House was “worth it.” honestly, i didn’t go. felt a bit… performative for me. i prefer to find the quiet stories, the ones growing in the shadows. like the wild roses i saw scrambling up a brick wall near the
Begijnhof.

Speaking of quiet, if you get bored,
Rotterdam and The Hague are just a short train ride away. Rotterdam’s architecture is wild, and The Hague has that whole international court vibe.

I also stumbled upon a really cool vintage clothing store in De Pijp. It’s called Episode, and they have some amazing finds. Check them out on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/biz/episode-amsterdam. I picked up a ridiculously oversized corduroy jacket that smells faintly of mothballs and adventure.

I heard that the
Vondelpark is a good spot for people-watching, but i mostly just observed the squirrels. they’re surprisingly bold. one tried to steal my fries.

Honestly, amsterdam isn’t as picture-perfect as the postcards suggest. it’s a bit damp, a bit crowded, and a bit… gritty. but it’s also full of life, and unexpected beauty. and the plants? the plants are
amazing. I’m already planning my return trip. Maybe next time i’ll actually visit a tulip farm. Or learn to cycle without falling into a canal.

Oh, and one last thing: someone warned me about pickpockets around
Dam Square. Apparently, it’s a hot spot. Just keep an eye on your stuff, okay? You can find more travel tips on TripAdvisor: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g18856-Amsterdam_North_Holland-Vacations.html.

Also, if you're into street art, check out the area around the
NDSM Wharf*. It's a bit outside the city center, but worth the trip. https://www.iamsterdam.com/en/see-and-do/neighbourhoods/ndsm-wharf
