algiers: where marathon runners get lost in the best way

algiers. man, this place hits different. i’m a marathon runner by trade, right? chasing pavement, chasing splits. but algiers? it’s like the city itself is a training run - brutal in all the right ways. the hills alone are making my calves scream, but the views? *crazy good.

i just checked the weather and it’s... 25°C with humidity so low it practically evaporates. perfect for a run? hell yeah. but if you’re not into that kind of dry heat, maybe pack a light shirt. hope you’re into that.

the vibe here? it’s medinas and motorcycles and
souk el fellah smells that’ll knock you sideways. someone told me the best running route is the corniche at dawn. locals just stare at you like you’re doing something weird, but also kinda respect it. then i heard the casbah hills are no joke. prepare to climb. like, seriously. if your quads aren’t crying by lunch, you’re doing it wrong.

if you get bored, tipaza is just a short drive away. roman ruins and ancient paths. perfect for a different kind of run through time. or if you’re feeling brave, the casbah - it’s a maze. but the views from the top? worth every wheezing step.

i crashed at this tiny place near the old city. found it through this yelp thread - a rooftop that overlooks the harbor. the breakfast was
mediocre, but the view? priceless. location? unbeatable for pre-dawn runs. though the stairs? brutal. good training i guess.

someone told me the real coffee is at Café des Artistes. i went, and it was... fine. but the almond croissants?
fire. owner’s a runner too. we bonded over blisters and the absurdity of chasing PRs in 30°C heat. he warned me the locals think anyone running before 7am is ‘either insane or escaping something.’ probably right.

food? oh man. lived on merguez sandwiches and harira soup. there’s this stall near the market that’s been slinging it for 50 years. the locals swear by it. and they’re not wrong. cheap, greasy, and fuel for hills. what more do you need?

but here’s the deal: algiers is not easy. traffic’s
insane. sidewalks vanish mid-step. but if you’re a runner, you adapt. i found myself weaving through markets at 5am to dodge chaos. sunrise over the mediterranean? made the shin splints worth it.

if you’re coming, bring your running shoes, but also bring your sense of adventure. and a good map. getting lost here is part of the fun. oh, and the marathon? i skipped it this time, but heard the
algeria marathon* in november is wild. tough course, but the crowd support? unreal.

for more running tips, peep this tripadvisor forum or this local board. they’ve got the real tea on routes and dodging donkey carts.

so yeah. algiers. already planning my next trip. maybe i’ll actually run that marathon next year. if the hills don’t kill me first.
